Ken 'Tank' Franks

JohnE McCray – Shot a 63 considering how the knee felt JohnE felt great about the round. He had a couple OBs.

Besides his Wizard putter, the S plastic Demon was his go to disc, he also used the Illusion and Element X to great effect. Threw wiz on 17, got circle 4. Better then a 26. JohnE mentioned he played with some good guys.

On 888 (hole 13) he went anhyzer off the tee that spun OB well down the fairway he parked a Demon under the basket for a circle 5. Birdied hole 4 with a nice second shot skipping thru the small gap to park the basket. He also mentioned the Illusion, Element X and Wizard. He made all putts inside 30 feet. JohnE and Jen wanted to send a message to his Gateway South Am team that he wasn’t quitting despite all the trouble with his knees. Good Luck JohnE.

Player Chat – Barry Schultz

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

Barry Schultz – 64 had 3 or 4 bad shots he didn’t like, was OB on 3 for his 1st time ever and took a bogey. OB twice on 12 but did have Birdies on 888 and 17. On 17 he turned over a really stable roc. Barry said he had a good time and he was in a fun and casual group. The wait on hole 4 was long. Sticky conditions (humidity is way up this afternoon) led to some grip problems. Go to discs included the DX Roc, Champion Leopard and Champion Firedird. Barry mentioned there looked like there were a lot of volunteers on the course and he wanted to thank them for their support.

Player Chat – Ken “Tank” Franks

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007
Ken 'Tank' Franks

Tank has the hot round with a 58 and an ace! His best competitive round here at the USDGC, his 3 year. Get this, his best previous round was a 70! Asked why the improvement he creditted taking some time over the winter playing with Dave Feldberg and Avery Jenkins. Says he’s a lot more confident this year.

Asked about his round he aced hole 7 with a Zonedriven Champion Firebird given to him by Brian Schweberger, making it the 16th disc Brian’s given away that’s gone on to ace a hole. Brian tracked him down to give him a big hug 5 holes later.

He did have an OB on 12 but no bogeys as he still saved par. 10 birdies, 8 pars! He threw Pro Wraiths, but a lot of Tbirds and Eagles, staying between the ropes. Went to the factory before the tourney and picked up a bunch of Tbirds and Eagles.

Asked about his strategy he said he was playing aggressive but played it a shot at a time. Putting was good, everything inside the circle went in. He just tried to stay on routine. Tank wants to thanks his sponsors, Innova Discs, Dynamic discs, Proflight discs, New Belgium Brewing Company and Long Tee Disc Golf Apparel Company.

Player Chat – Peter Wyngaard

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

Peter Wyngaard – 61, no OBs! Millennium Discs offered a $500 cash prize for a no OB round that was par or better and we think Peter’s round may have been the first but we’re not 100%. Very impressive round considering the amount of yellow rope out there marking OB.

Peter said his 61 felt great, with no OBs and just one bogey on hole 11. His 3rd shot on 11 the wind lifted it and he missed a 28 ft. putt for par. His closest scape with the OB lines came on hole 18, his 2nd shot came up short of in bounds but was hyzering back in when it caught a stake on 18, and kicked right and OB. The disc caught an edge and rolled just back in bounds half in and half out. Whew! Safe by just inches. On 17 he threw a new Challenger toward the middle of the green, with a little extra it to fight the wind it landed safely. His MVP was an Elite Z Avenger, usually he prefers a Surge. Hole 1 hit a tree off the pad and parred. But got his round started with a a 3 on 2. When things went off plan he went conservative. On 5 his 2nd shot was short so he bombed it safely around the corner instead of cutting across the lake. He birdied 7,8, 9 and 10! Threw forehand on 5 and 8 for the first time at the USDGC emulating Geoffe Bennett using an Elite Z Talon.

Player Chat – Harold Duvall

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

Harold Duvall – Says his game is like a box of chocolates… Round was exciting, up and down. He knows where the happiness and and sadness is on the course and he found a little of both. Holes 1 and 2 started birdie, birdie. Hole 4 was a 6, his own new route got him and his forehand shot went long. The course is set up so the holes with lots of different routes to encourage shot making. Second guessing leads to big numbers, you have to commit to a shot. Found all the OB on 9, found the black monster, a.k.a. the baseball diamond sunscreen. He went behind the sunscreen. Elevated basket got him for a couple putts on hole 9 too. MVP disc was a DX Wolf. Rolled it a number of times on holes 2, 5 and 18. Star Destoyer for the sidearms. As a designer he designs with listening in mind, players jumping for joy and giving folks a mountain top experience. Oh yeah, and on Hole 17 he threw a sidearm into the back right corner.

Player Chat – Jim Myers and Steve Welck

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

Jim Myers – a 9 Timer, shot 74. Could have been a 70, he says he didn’t play 17 correctly, missed twice going for the pin. He’s from Hunt Valley, Maryland Best disc is an old fairly beat Ontario Roc. He hit birdies on both elevated baskets. Took a 5 on 888. Tom Kim was his caddy watching him get nervous watching people throw it OB, Tom insisted he throw a backhand stable shot, threw two shots to stay safe then went for the green, landing within 25 ft. He missed the putt. Says he had a lot of fun and played with some great players.

Day 1 first tee off group

Steve Welck – 1st round ever on the course. No warm up. Grouped helped him out, said he was playing with a bunch of good guys. He flew in from Hawaii via Phoenix. Says the course is everything people told him it would be. Went OB on 2nd shots just because he wasn’t . MVP disc was the Aviar P&A and JK Aviar-X putter, hit all his putts inside 30ft. Hole 17 he went for it and skipped into the water, stuck a roc right under the basket for a 4. Was a learning experience. Hole 4 bounced off the evergreens twice. Traveled the longest of any US player, PDGA state co-coordinator. He had a great time, it was a lot of fun! Steve sends love to his family!

Player Chat – Ken Climo

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

Ken Climo – Says he played better then he scored, had a spit out and missed a few putts. Shot 1 down on the front 9 and 4 down on the back nine, upside down on the scoring just like Schweberger. Went OB on his thumber up shot on 18. Played safe on 17, aiming 50 ft. right just make sure he hits the 3. Went OB on 9 by an inch.

Player Chat – Brian Schweberger

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

Brian Schweberger – Says he started slow, shot even on front, not acceptable in his book, 28 or 29 is OK. 5 down on back, best back side score he’s ever had. He was relaly unhappy with his start. Go to disc for the day Champ and Star Firebirds, nice and overstable predictable. Circle 5 on 888, nice putt on 15, played hole 15 for 4 all last year, hit the 3. Birdied 17! Was going for the 3, and made a 30 footer. Was windier then any practice day since Friday, some 15 mph gusts. 6 on 4, 2nd thumber caught the tree on the far side, rolled over the cinder block. Circle 5 on 5, OB off Tee left, 380 over water and hit the putt.

Player Chat – Kevin Couch and Geoff Bennett

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

Kevin Couch – Was a battle out there but he was happy that he finished well. 68. Feels the course is playing a stroke harder then last years. About saving par and making putts. Made a few good choices coming down the stretch, great drive on 15. Layed up on 17 with a putter into the safe area, putter up to the basket, playing for 4 and no blow ups, but he hit the putt for a 3.

Geoff Bennett – 63 2 7s on 3 and 9. He hit the stake to stay OB twice on hole 3! On hole 9 he went OB on the drive, missed by an inch. 3 inches from 7 strokes better! Birdied 18 for 1st time ever, got birdies on 16 and 17 too. Birdied 888. Threw 3 backhands drives all day, Only threw 4 discs total, Buzz, Surge, Talon and Cam Todd Challenger. The Z Talon for him is super accurate inside 420 it was his go to disc of the day for 90% of all shots Z Talon. Hole 1 and 6 and 15 were his only backhand drives.
